Nõrkteaduslik tervisejuust ja teised leiud märtsi ajakirjandusest

  • Südamejuust sai Euroopa toiduohutusametilt negatiivse hinnangu
    Postimees

E-Piima väitel aitab Südamejuustu regulaarne tarvitamine vähemalt kolme nädala jooksul vererõhku alandades hoida südame ja südame-veresoonkonna tervist. Selline toime tuleneb firma kinnitusel juustule lisatud Tensia bakterist (Lactobacillus plantarum Tensia).

«Harmony Südamejuustu tervislikud omadused on teaduslikult tõestatud kliiniliste katsetuste teel, milles on osalenud rohkem kui 200 inimest,» kõlab tsitaat E-Piima mullusest pressiteatest.

Euroopa Liidu vastav komisjon on tõesti ette võtnud kohutavalt suure hunniku tööd. Teadus on kõigile sama.

Ükskord tasub ehk sellele kodulehele pikem pilk peale visata ja uurida näiteks, mis asutus on Tervisliku Piima Biotehnoloogiate Arenduskeskus.

  • Arstid hoiatavad: ise pandud diagnoos on tervisele ohtlik!

Ohhoo, see juba on midagi.

  2. Postimees kirjutab tuntud parteispetsialisti Indrek Toome vandenõuteooriatest:

  4. Uut ja vana jama riskide alal koostab Põhja-Ameerikas tegutsev teeäärmuslane Bachmann ja vahendab CBS News.

Minnesota Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann on Tuesday reintroduced the “Light Bulb Freedom of Choice Act,” a bill to repeal a 2007 law mandating that incandescent light bulbs be phased out.

Bachmann says the mandate should only stay in place is (1) there is proof that alternate bulbs save consumers money, (2) there is proof that alternate bulbs significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions and (3) that it’s shown that alternate bulbs “would not lead to a health risk for consumers, particularly those in hospitals, schools, day care centers and nursing homes.”

Päris maailmas sedasorti riskivabadust muidugi ei eksisteeri. Näiteks valgustundlike porfüüriate all kannatavatele patsientidele on uutmoodi elektripirnid täiesti reaalseks riskiks. Vanamoodi pirnid on ka. Päike taevas on ka.

Vaenulikkus säästupirnide vastu on eeskätt poliitiline, mistõttu talking point‘id kiiresti üle Lombi jõuavad. Näiteks kõrge kasuteguriga soojapalle müüv heatball.de on alustanud märterluskunstilist projekti just sellesama poliitilise klientkonna võitmiseks:

    Dear Frau Schäfer,
As representative for Culture in our Bundesland I request that you stop the criminalisation of the resistance art project http://www.heatball.de The public authorities were informed about the protest action, but nevertheless had the District Governement of Cologne has on the grounds of product safety ordered that 40,000 Heatballs be witheld by the customs in Cologne Bonn.

Seda, et tegemist on tõsikunstilise projektiga, kinnitab soojapalle müüva juriidilise keha nimi, milleks on DTG Trading GmbH.

  5. Ameerika Naturopaatiliste Arstide Assotsiatsiooni president on oma blogis kirjutanud armastuskirja teadusele. Postitus tõmbas endale hulka tähelepanu ja tänaseks on too blog kustutatud, aga kiri on saadaval Google cache’is.

Thus it has become an increasing concern to me when I read articles and blogs on the Internet blasting naturopathic medicine for being “unscientific.” These frequently polemic articles, while professing to come from scientific logic, to my eye are biased misrepresentations of the truth. They often lambast our profession and philosophy as unscientific, yet I have yet to see any one of them provide a critical analysis of research done by naturopathic physicians and researchers. It is sad that science can be used in these political ways.

This is important. As a student at Bastyr University, I remember Dr. Joe Pizzorno saying that if our profession is to be taken seriously by the larger world of medicine, we must speak in a language that everyone can understand and appreciate. That language is the language of science, and few have done more over the past 25 years than Dr. Pizzorno to increase the credibility of the naturopathic profession using this approach. While I think we all can agree that we draw both from science as well as traditional practices and experiences when evaluating the efficacy of our therapies and approaches to practicing medicine, advancing the research and science agenda remains an important step for our profession to move forward, especially with the continued interest in evidence-based approaches to health care.

    Mis saab edasi?

Järgnevalt on Mikelsaarel ja Zilmeril kavas üks suurema osalejate arvuga randomiseeritud uuring, kus just kõrg-normaalse vererõhuga katsealused söövad südamejuustu ja võrdlusrühm samasugust Edam-tüüpi juustu, milles TENSIA bakterit ei ole.

    […]

Nii Mikelsaar kui Zilmer möönavad, et EFSA üks peaülesandeid on hoida turult eemal kõlavaid väiteid kandvad imetoiduaineid, mis väidetavalt aitavad sadade tõbede puhul, kuid ühegi väite kohta pole olemas teaduslikku uuringut. “Nad peavad nõiad ja soolapuhujad õigusega eemale hoidma,” möönab Mikelsaar.

Niisiis on Mikelsaar ja Zilmer valmis südamejuustu toimet edasi uurima. Juba on sisse antud uus eetikakomitee taotlus, et uurida inimesi, kelle vererõhk on üle 130 mmHg.

  11. Tablet Magazine kirjutab huvitavast kommertsteenusest.

Last year, a young man called in to a radio station with a problem. He’d recently attended a bachelor party, he said, and a friend of the groom-to-be, clueless of the unwritten etiquette of maledom, brought his girlfriend along, derailing what was supposed to be a weekend of gambling, girls, and general debauchery. The caller told his story with passion and verve, and then asked the station’s listeners for their advice on how to treat his clueless pal.

Or at least he would have, had this been a real conversation. The young man—who asked to remain nameless in order to protect his chances for future employment—was an actor, and the staged call an audition. A short while later, he received the following email: “Thank you for auditioning for Premiere On Call,” it said. “Your audition was great! We’d like to invite you to join our official roster of ‘ready-to-work’ actors.” The job, the email indicated, paid $40 an hour, with one hour guaranteed per day.

But what exactly was the work? The question popped up during the audition and was explained, the actor said, clearly and simply: If he passed the audition, he would be invited periodically to call in to various talk shows and recite various scenarios that made for interesting radio. He would never be identified as an actor, and his scenarios would never be identified as fabricated—which they always were.

“Premiere On Call is our new custom caller service,” read the service’s website, which disappeared as this story was being reported (for a cached version of the site click here). “We supply voice talent to take/make your on-air calls, improvise your scenes or deliver your scripts. Using our simple online booking tool, specify the kind of voice you need, and we’ll get your the right person fast. Unless you request it, you won’t hear that same voice again for at least two months, ensuring the authenticity of your programming for avid listeners.”

“Iga tavaline teadusuuring tegeleb saadud tulemuste analüüsiga, siit saavadki alguse avastused. Probiootilise juustu katsealuste grupeerimine vererõhu algväärtuste alusel ja selle järgi toime selgitamine pole uute rühmitamisandmete kasutuselevõtt, on kinnitanud mitmed biostatistikud Tartu ülikoolist,” ütles ta. /…/

Lisaks on veel üks probleem. Kui ravimiuuringutes on platseebo tablettides lihtsalt ilma mõjuta tärklisepulber, siis probiootilise juustu efekti suurust pole platseeboga võrrelda võimalik. /…/

Nii Mikelsaar kui Zilmer möönavad, et EFSA üks peaülesandeid on hoida turult eemal kõlavaid väiteid kandvad imetoiduaineid, mis väidetavalt aitavad sadade tõbede puhul, kuid ühegi väite kohta pole olemas teaduslikku uuringut. “Nad peavad nõiad ja soolapuhujad õigusega eemale hoidma,” möönab Mikelsaar.

  13. Lesknaine Aili: “Elan jah koos mehe urniga. Aga see ei ole teiste asi!”
Tõesti pole see teiste asi.

Millist ohtu kujutab urn kadunukese tuhaga elavatele?

    Kadunukese hing tuleb vabaks lasta

Sangaste koguduse õpetaja Ivo Pill lisab omalt poolt:

Surnurüvetamine (mida muud inimpõrmuga meelevaldse käitumise kohta ikka öelda) on muutumas perekondlikuks uustavaks.

  14. IEEE Spectrum review’b kolme raamatut mõrvarlikest mikrolainetest.

Do you feel zapped, disconnected, electronically polluted by electromagnetic fields in your homes and workplace? Are you fearful of your electricity? These three books will feed your fears.

Disconnect is the latest tome by Devra Davis, an epidemiologist with a variety of academic appointments on her résumé. Her previous books have excoriated other industries for the risks of their products, and in 2007 she founded an organization, Environmental Health Trust, “capitalizing on growing public interest” in them. In Disconnect she turns her attention to one of the “addictive delights of our technological age”—cellphones.

In her less rigorous book, Zapped, Ann Louise Gittleman takes aim at electromagnetic fields of all sorts, from those emitted by cellphones to the much lower frequency fields associated with power lines. “You may be surprised—even shocked,” she says, “to discover that on a daily basis you are exposed to some form of electromagnetic radiation that may be compromising your health.” She describes the “electrosensitivity syndrome” that causes people to experience “a variety of often debilitating symptoms when they’re exposed to even low-level radiation.”

Gittleman, who has a Ph.D. in holistic nutrition from the Clayton College of Natural Health and calls herself “the First Lady of Nutrition,” says readers can “zap-proof” their lives by making “food and [food] supplements your radiation shield.” Her “Zapped Diet” contains “the nutrients your body needs to help neutralize the stressful impact from EMF [electromagnetic field] side effects,” and recommends honeybee food supplements (for its caffeic acid, a component of bee resin) and eating lots of walnuts. She provides links to activist organizations concerned about health effects of electromagnetic fields, and to homeopathic practitioners offering “internal EMF protection detoxification.”

Samuel Milham, in his short professional autobiography Dirty Electricity, describes his longstanding interest in the possible health risks of environmental electromagnetic fields, which he clearly views as real. Milham is best known for his studies beginning in the 1980s linking electricity-related occupations and cancer risks (for example, being a ham radio operator and leukemia; using an electric typewriter and breast cancer).

  15. Miller-McCune kirjutab, kui tähtis on mõisteid nimetada poliitiliselt korrektsel viisil.

New research finds Republicans scoff at “global warming,” but are much more receptive to the notion of “climate change.”

Writing in the journal Public Opinion Quarterly, a research team led by University of Michigan psychologist Jonathon Schuldt reports Republicans are far more skeptical of “global warming” than of “climate change.” In an experiment conducted as part of a large survey, the researchers found 44 percent of Republicans endorsed the notion that “global warming” is real, but 60.2 percent said the same of “climate change.”
In contrast, 86 to 87 percent of Democrats endorsed the reality of a changing climate, no matter which descriptive phrase was used. This means the partisan divide over the issue is either overwhelmingly enormous or potentially bridgeable, depending upon the terminology one uses.

Saadaval on ka abstract: “Global warming” or “climate change”? Whether the planet is warming depends on question wording

  16. CNN kirjutab enamuste rassilisest tagakiusamisest Põhja-Ameerikas:

“We went from being a privileged group to all of a sudden becoming whites, the new victims,” says Charles Gallagher, a sociologist at La Salle University in Pennsylvania who researches white racial attitudes and was baffled to find that whites see themselves as a minority.
“You have this perception out there that whites are no longer in control or the majority. Whites are the new minority group.”
Call it racial jujitsu: A growing number of white Americans are acting like a racially oppressed majority. They are adopting the language and protest tactics of an embattled minority group, scholars and commentators say.

For many decades, white people saw themselves as individuals, not as members of a race, says Matt Wray, a sociologist at Temple University in Pennsylvania, who writes books about white studies.
“We are often offended if someone calls attention to our race as shaping how we view the world,” says Wray, author of “Not Quite White.” “We don’t like to be pigeon-holed that way. Non-white Americans are seldom afforded this luxury of seeing themselves as individuals, disconnected from any race.”
    White only scholarship debate
Still, Wray says anxiety among whites over their place in America is nothing new. Some 19th century whites worried about slave revolts. During segregation. some worried about blacks they labeled as “uppity Negroes.”
“Whites have never really felt terribly secure in their majority status,” he says. “It’s often said that it is lonely at the top, but it’s also an anxious place to be, because you live in constant fear of falling.”

Pärastlõunal viidi Aegnalt helikopteriga mandrile saareelanik, kelle tervis halvenes järsult.

Elaniku ligi kuu tagasi alguse saanud tervisehädad halvenesid täna oluliselt, temperatuuri tõusule lisandunud hingamisraskused nullisid ka viimased iseravimise lootused.

  19. NZ Herald kirjutab Uus-Meremaa peaministri uuest aksessuaarist.

Prime Minister John Key is sporting a new holographic wristband that claims to improve performance and keep the body at an optimal “ionic balance” with “free-flowing energy pathways”.

“They restore optimal electro-magnetic balance and promote free-flowing energy pathways – NO PROMISES, JUST RESULTS.” But last month Power Balance Australia admitted there was no “credible scientific evidence” to support its claim that the wristband improved strength, balance and flexibility. It apologised for its misleading promotions and offered purchasers a full refund.

It is unclear if the Prime Minister believes in the benefits of the band, and he did not return calls last night.

  20. The New Republic kirjutab Georgia seaduseelnõust nurisünnituse üle elanud naiste peedistamiseks.

A Georgia state representative known for his fringe politics has introduced a radical pro-life bill that not only calls for the nullification of Roe v. Wade, but also makes having a miscarriage a capital offense unless the mother can irrefutably prove that there was “no human involvement whatsoever in the causation of such an event.” Laced with misogyny, insensitivity, and pseudo-science, Representative Bobby Franklin’s House Bill 1 (HB1) could be considered ridiculous, if it was not just the latest episode in a frightening turn of right-wing pro-life extremism that targets pregnant women.

HB1 rationalizes that, because “Georgia has the duty to protect all innocent life from the moment of conception until natural death,” the failure of an inseminated egg to come to term should fall under suspicion as an act of “prenatal murder.” So, if Franklin has his way, hospitals would be mandated to report every miscarriage (which, he points out, is known medically as “spontaneous abortion”) to the local police, who would then somehow ascertain the cause of the miscarriage. The burden of proof, in other words, would be placed on the woman who might be mourning the loss of her pregnancy.

  21. Associated Press räägib autode ja ämblike suurest sõprusest.

WASHINGTON – Mazda has some creepy crawly culprits in its new safety recall — spiders.

After discovering spider webs in the vents, the Japanese automaker is recalling more than 50,000 Mazda6 cars from the 2009-2010 model years in the United States and an additional 15,000 vehicles in Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico.

The company said Thursday a spider could weave a web in a vent connected to the fuel tank system and clog up the tank’s ventilation. Pressure on the fuel tank could lead to a crack, causing fuel leakage and the risk of a fire.

Mazda spokesman Jeremy Barnes said dealers had identified 20 cases in which spider webs were found in the vents. The webs were linked to yellow sac spiders, Barnes said, but it was unclear why they were crawling into the Mazda6 rather than other vehicles.

  22. Forte kirjutab ebatavalistest seksuaaltraditsioonidest loomariigis.

WASHINGTON — The US government could net over $5 billion by scrapping the one dollar bill and replacing it with a coin equivalent, an official study claimed.

“Replacing the $1 note with a $1 coin could save the government approximately $5.5 billion over 30 years,” the Government Accountability Office, a congressional watchdog, said in a new report.

Opposition in some quarters is vociferous. Legislation has even been brought to Congress to forbid the greenback’s demise.

“It is common for people to take coins out of their pockets and store them at the end of each day rather than retain them in their wallets as they do notes, for use the next day,” the report explained.

In addition vending and self-checkout machines would have to be reconfigured, armored trucks upgraded to carry additional weight and vaults expanded.

Ilusast läikivast rahast kirjutab Salt Lake Tribune.

It may not fold as conveniently as dollar bills, but the Utah House took a first step Friday to recognize gold and silver as legal tender.

It voted 47-26 to pass HB317 by Rep. Brad Galvez, R-West Haven, and sent it to the Senate. The measure would recognize as legal tender gold and silver coins issued by the federal government — not just their face value, but also their value in gold and silver or to a collector.

Kas säärase rahavormi juures üldse keegi teaks, mitu dollarit üks hõbedollar täna väärt on, on kahjuks teadmata.

SEVERAL PEOPLE recently asked me what I think of the work of Masaru Emoto. Emoto claims that human speech or thoughts have dramatic effects on water. He claims that, depending on the nature of the speech or thoughts directed at water, when the water is frozen its crystals will be “beautiful” or “ugly” depending on whether the thoughts were positive or negative. If Emoto is right, we have a most amazing phenomenon here with dramatic implications, as illustrated by the simple fact that 75 per cent of all biological tissue, including the human body, is water.

It is very unlikely that there is any reality behind Emoto’s claims. A triple blind study of these claims failed to show any effect. Also, the phenomenon he describes has never been published in a peer reviewed science journal, which almost certainly means that the effect cannot be demonstrated under controlled conditions. But, you may say, perhaps nobody has tried to replicate this effect under controlled conditions. I very much doubt that. After all, Emoto’s phenomenon would be amazing, if true, and the demonstrator of the phenomenon would achieve instant fame and, probably, fortune.

  25. Pulse mõtiskleb, kas meditsiinialternatiivides koolitatud perearstide patsientide tulemused on paremad.

Dutch investigators recently published what must be the biggest sensation in CAM research in many years.

Patients whose GP has additional training in anthroposophic medicine, homeopathy, or acupuncture have substantially lower health care costs and lower mortality rates. The lower costs result from fewer hospital stays and fewer prescription drugs. Since the differences remain after controlling for neighbourhood specific fixed effects, the lower costs and longer lives are unlikely to be related to differences in socio-economic status.1

At the risk of being a true spoil sport, I’d like to offer a few interpretations of these results:

  26. Daily Mail annab teada, et USA Loodeülikool on asunud peedistama psühholoogiaprofessorit, kes pärast loengut inimeste seksuaalkäitumisest lubas külalisesinejal tudengitele demonstreerida motoriseeritud fallosliku objekti kasutamist seksuaalotstarbel.

A Northwestern University professor who allowed students to watch a live sex demonstration in his class has defended his decision, saying ‘that is what I get paid for’.
The after class event involved a woman being brought to orgasm by a machine-powered saw with a phallic object instead of a blade.
The graphic act was performed in front of about 100 students in psychology professor John Michael Bailey’s human sexuality class last week.

It has since been reported by DailyNorthwestern.com, that leading researcher Robin Mathy will file a complaint against prof. Bailey to the university for what she called ‘a gross violation’ of the American Psychological Association Code of Ethics.

However, the president of Northwestern University Morton Schapiro said yesterady he was launching an investigation as he was ‘troubled and disappointed’ by what happened.
He said: ‘I feel it represented extremely poor judgment on the part of our faculty member.
‘I simply do not believe this was appropriate, necessary, or in keeping with Northwestern University’s academic mission.
Schapiro said he has directed that the incident be fully investigated, and he wants to clarify what constitutes ‘appropriate pedagogy’.
‘Many members of the Northwestern community are disturbed by what took place on our campus and so am I.’

  27. USA Today kirjutab kaubamajade sitastest kärudest.

A University of Arizona researcher says you may want to grab one of those disinfectant wipes right before you grab a grocery cart.
Professor Charles Gerba, the lead researcher, swabbed the handles of 85 carts in four states for bacterial contamination.

Gerba says 72% of the carts had a positive marker for fecal bacteria. When they examined some of the samples, they found Escherichia coli, also known as E. coli, on half of them.

Researchers say they actually found more fecal bacteria on grocery cart handles than you would typically find in a bathroom, mainly because bathrooms are disinfected more often than shopping carts.

  28. Uurimuse üle ei jäta virisemata NaturalNews:

Interestingly, while this study found all kinds of fecal matter on the grocery cart handles, it didn’t really look at all the crap inside the shopping carts! The processed cheese food, carbonated sodas with high-fructose corn syrup, the factory-processed sandwich meat with cancer-causing nitrites, and the canned soups with sky-high levels of cheap salt and hormone-mimicking BPA… you get the idea. That’s often referred to as “crap food” if you’ll pardon our language.

  29. Cassandra’s Tears kirjutab ribonukleotiidide spontaansest polümerisatsioonist viisil, mis võis elu sigitada.

So, the researchers took a different route. Instead of starting with the base materials (ribose, the nucleotides, and phosphates), they started to explore alternative chemical paths to get the same result (that is, RNA).

What they found, was that by starting from the exact same precursors that has been shown to be chemically possible, they found another path. A series of chemical reactions that avoids all the problems of the ‘traditional’ pathway.

Their chemical path simply bypasses ribose and the free pyrimidine nucleobase. What they also found was that by avoiding trying to incorporate phosphate into the structure directly and, instead, using inorganic phosphate as a catalyst, they were able to increase the yield of the materials they needed at the conditions (pH mainly) that those materials had to have to form. In fact, having the phosphate present helped increase yields of all intermediate materials.

Finally, in the last step, inorganic phosphate acted as a buffer to prevent an increase in pH that would reduce yields.

I freely admit that I’m not a biochemist (thank Cthulu), but I can understand conclusions very well and considering that this paper appears to be highly cited and generally well received (I do know of one or two hold outs), I think this paper shows what it needs to. That there is a chemically plausible way to get from inorganic materials all the way to RNAs.

  32. Discovery News kirjutab hüpoteetilistest üksteisest kaugel asuvaid tähti ühendavatest ussiaukudest.

In an article posted online at arXiv.org February 25, physicist Vladimir Folomeev of the Institute of Physicotechnical Problems and Material Science in the Kyrgyz Republic and his colleagues suggest that pairs of stars could be joined by wormholes full of an exotic material known as “phantom matter.”

Strictly hypothetical, phantom matter has been proposed as a possible explanation for the accelerating expansion of the universe. Its exotic properties could also enable phantom matter to keep a wormhole propped open.

“I am pretty sure that once you admit exotic matter of some suitable kind, you can mathematically construct a star with a wormhole inside,” comments relativity theorist Dieter Brill of the University of Maryland in College Park.

Actually seeing a wormhole is another thing entirely. It’s possible, says Folomeev, that a stellar wormhole might generate signals that telescopes could record.

For now, this is just an idea that still must be confirmed by further calculations, says Folomeev.

Although it’s unclear whether or not the stellar wormhole model will collapse under scrutiny, says Brill, “I am generally in favor of calculating models that a priori seem far-fetched and wild.”

  33. Providence Journal kirjutab, et Providence’i linnas Rhode Islandil on kohalik koolivalitsus otsustanud kõik kooliõpetajad lahti lasta.

PROVIDENCE — After two hours of contentious discussion, the School Board voted 4 to 3 Thursday night to send out termination notices to each of the city’s 1,926 public school teachers.

Every teacher received a certified letter from the School Department on Thursday informing them that they might be terminated at the end of the school year. It also said the School Board would vote on the proposed dismissals at Thursday night’s meeting, which was moved to the Providence Career and Technical Academy to accommodate the huge turnout.

Many of the teachers were caught off guard by Mayor Angel Taveras’ decision to terminate teachers instead of laying them off. Last night, speakers questioned the mayor’s rationale: a $40-million school budget deficit and a March 1 deadline by which the School Department must notify teachers if their jobs are in jeopardy.

  34. Delimiter kirjutab arengutest õpetamisteooria vallast. Pärast vastavasisulise eksperimendi korraldamist ning tulemuste analüüsimist on Melbourne’i ülikool otsustanud asuda tudengitele jagama elektroonilisi tahvleid.

The aim of Trinity’s so-called ‘Step Forward’ project was to test the iPads in an educational environment, as well as to evaluate whether a wider deployment would be appropriate. Apple’s tablet was chosen for a number of factors such as educational flexibility, cost, weight, battery life and so on, although a number of other devices such as netbooks, laptops, eBook readers and Samsung’s Galaxy Tab tablet were also tested.

In a report on the trial published on Saturday and available online, the college found that both staff (72.2 percent) and students (80 percent) overwhelmingly recommended the iPad for use by others. “iPads are effective, durable, reliable and achieve their educational aims of going further, faster and with more fun,” the college wrote.

Trinity found through its trial that iPads were not a replacement for desktop or laptop computers — or even other educational technologies — but were an “enhancement”.

The report — which was published under the names of Trinity academic and IT staff Glen Jennings, Trent Anderson, Mark Dorset and Jennifer Mitchell — recommended that iPads be rolled out in 2011 to all staff involved in Trinity’s Foundation Studies course, which prepares overseas students for undergraduate university entry.

  38. The Independent kirjutab ohtlikest kreatsionistlikest usuhulludest vanal heal Inglismaal:

A prominent British imam has been forced to retract his claims that Islam is compatible with Darwin’s theory of evolution after receiving death threats from fundamentalists.

Dr Usama Hasan, a physics lecturer at Middlesex University and a fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, was intending yesterday to return to Masjid al-Tawhid, a mosque in Leyton, East London, for the first time since he delivered a lecture there entitled “Islam and the theory of evolution”.

But according to his sister, police advised him not to attend after becoming concerned for his safety. Instead his father, Suhaib, head of the mosque’s committee of trustees, posted a notice on his behalf expressing regret over his comments. “I seek Allah’s forgiveness for my mistakes and apologise for any offence caused,” the statement read.

The campaign is part of a growing movement by a small but vocal group of largely Saudi-influenced orthodox Muslims who use evolution as a way of discrediting imams whom they deem to be overly progressive or “western orientated”.

  39. Suurbritannias tegutsev kristliku peedistamisjuriidika keskus Christian Legal Centre juubeldab edu üle Oxfordis tegutsenud sületantsuklubi peedistamisel.

Christians in Oxford are celebrating after their local authority rejected a licence application for a “sexual entertainment venue” to operate yards from a church. Members of St Ebbe’s Church in Oxford as well as local residents have praised the Council for its decision.

Mis skeptiku tähelepanu tõmbab, on kahtlase väärtusega väited seksuaallõbustuste ja naiste ööelu riskide vaheliste seoste osas:

The Revd Vaughan Roberts, Rector of St Ebbe’s, said: “As a church, we campaigned against this licence application as we did not believe this sort of establishment should continue to have a base in the city centre of Oxford. Oxford has a large percentage of young women, and an establishment such as this could put those enjoying the culture and nightlife in Oxford at risk.

Teatavat huvi pakub ka peedistamisekspertide selge tahe peedistada asutusi mitte sellepärast, et nad kirikute naabruses asuvad vaid sellepärast, et nad kesklinnas asuvad:

“In addition, many children and young people use our church building each week and to have such a club in close proximity would not be appropriate. We are delighted the Council has made this decision – the first under the new rules – and it should put out a very clear message that this sort of premises is not welcome in our city centres.”

  40. New York Times kirjutab, kuidas arenenud poliitika vabastab teaduse faktide ängistavaist ahelaist.

The politicization of science isn’t particularly new; the Bush administration was famous for pressuring government agencies to bring their vision of reality in line with White House imperatives. In response to this, and with a renewed culture war over the very nature of scientific reality clearly brewing, the Obama administration tried to initiate a pre-emptive strike earlier this winter, issuing a set of “scientific integrity” guidelines aimed at keeping the work of government scientists free from ideological pollution. But since taking over the House of Representatives, the Republicans have packed science-related committees with lawmakers who refute such basic findings as the reality of global warming and the threats of climate change. Fred Upton, the head of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, has said outright that he does not believe that global warming is man-made. John Shimkus of Illinois, who also sits on the committee — as well as on the Subcommittee on Energy and Environment — has said that the government doesn’t need to make a priority of regulating greenhouse-gas emissions, because as he put it late last year, “God said the earth would not be destroyed by a flood.”

Following the Sokal hoax, many on the academic left experienced some real embarrassment. But the genie was out of the bottle. And as the political zeitgeist shifted, attacking science became a sport of the radical right. “Some standard left arguments, combined with the left-populist distrust of ‘experts’ and ‘professionals’ and assorted high-and-mighty muckety-mucks who think they’re the boss of us, were fashioned by the right into a powerful device for delegitimating scientific research,” Michael Bérubé, a literature professor at Pennsylvania State University, said of this evolution recently in the journal Democracy. He quoted the disillusioned French theorist Bruno Latour, a pioneer of science studies who was horrified by the climate-change-denying machinations of the right: “Entire Ph.D. programs are still running to make sure that good American kids are learning the hard way that facts are made up, that there is no such thing as natural, unmediated, unbiased access to truth . . . while dangerous extremists are using the very same argument of social construction to destroy hard-won evidence that could save our lives.”

  41. Postimees vahendab Euroopa Toiduohutuse Ameti seisukohti:

«Pole vahet, kas tegemist on suure või väikese ettevõttega, tarbijale esitatav väide peab olema tõene,» kinnitas ameti toidu- ja toitumise valdkonna teaduskomisjoni juht Juliane Kleiner. «Miks peaks väiksematele tegema erandi ja lubama neil väita midagi, millel pole tõepõhja, ning nõudma ainult suurtelt ettevõtetelt veenvat tõendusmaterjali?»

    Eriti lahe on see:

Suure hulga negatiivsete hinnangute taga on Kleineri selgituse järgi enamasti kehv tõendusmaterjal.

  43. Eks-keskerakondlik veebimees Virgo Kruve räägib mõiste maksumaksja raha jaikoloogilisest tõlgendusest:

Liiklusmõrvar Andres Jõesaar(51) (ERR-i nõukogu liige) sõitis ühe inimese surnuks ja teise vigaseks. Karistuseks mõisteti talle täna TINGIMISI ühe aasta ja kuue kuu pikkune vangistus 18 kuu pikkuse katseajaga. Kannatanud on loobunud tsiviilhagist, sest nad on saanud Jõesaarega hüvitise suhtes kokkuleppele. See hüvitis makstaks Eesti Rahvusringhäälingu nõukogu juhi kohal teenitud palgast. Seega maksab Jõesaar kahjutasu maksumaksjalt saadud palgast.
